include a group that range from confidante and council, through to friendship and support. Some individuals will be all of the above. I have touched on the importance of network previously, however the past 5 months, has reinforced for me, the critical impact your network can and will have on you personally and your career. Whilst thinking about and starting my business, I reached heavily into my own network, for advice, support and to ask the question, was I crazy doing this?! I was provided honest views and many suggestions of what I might consider and who I should connect with. Whilst, some where a little surprised I was taking this path, overwhelmingly the congratulations and offers of support and "what can I do to help you" gave me the confidence to trust my decision. I have thought a lot over this time, as to who I have lost touch with over the years and who I have planned to connect with, however often found myself in the "too busy" trap and never made the time. I am deliberately making time now and enjoying seeing old faces and meeting really interesting new people. What I do know, is that without this strong and trusted network I am lucky enough to have, as decisive as I can be, I am unlikely to have felt confident enough to make the change I did. Make sure you have a network plan, so that time does not get away. You have to invest the time. Some thoughts whilst you are doing this.

  • This is a relationship. Don't make this about just what you want. Be there for them.

  • Create time and ensure you are not only connecting when you are looking for a new role or want something from them.

  • Be generous with your time, however also protect this fiercely. Don't waste your energy on those who do not value the relationship.

  • Surround yourself with amazing, intelligent and diverse people. They will uplift and energise you. You will learn things you did not know you were even interested in!

  • Where there are people you want to bring into your network or would like to meet, just do it, however be considered and don't randomly try and connect with everyone on Linkedin. The worst outcome is they say no.

  • For those that you are looking at as a mentor or guide, if they are making the time for you, listen to the advice and try what they have suggested.

Most of all be authentic and be genuine as to why you would like to bring this person into your world or bring a current connection, closer to you. Your trusted network, if taken care of, will be there for you, in different ways, across your life and career. Until next time Lisa
